How the five fields work
| Field | Values | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Minute | 0-59 | |
| Hour | 0-23 | 24-hour clock |
| Day of month | 1-31 | |
| Month | 1-12 | |
| Day of week | 0-7 | 0 and 7 are Sunday |
Each field accepts *, a number, a range (1-5), a step (*/15), a list (1,15,30), or a combination (10-20/2).
Examples worth remembering
*/5 * * * * every five minutes
0 * * * * top of every hour
0 3 * * * daily at 03:00
0 9 * * 1-5 weekdays at 09:00
0 0 1 * * first day of each month
0 2 * * 0 Sundays at 02:00
Three things that bite people
Sunday is both 0 and 7. Pick one and stay consistent; the tool normalises both.
Day of month and day of week are OR, not AND. 0 0 1 * 1 runs on the first of the month and on every Monday. If you need both conditions, put the check inside the script.
The schedule uses the server’s timezone. Check it with timedatectl before trusting the preview below, and note that the preview shows times in your browser’s timezone.
